Dragon Quest IX Skill System Info
4Gamer.net just posted an article about Dragon Quest IX’s Attributes and Skills.
So far, five classes have been revealed for Dragon Quest IX: Soldier, Mage, Priest, Fighter and Thief.
Attributes
Each character has the following Attributes, which go up when you fight monsters and gain levels or when you equip certain equipment:
- Strength
- Agility
- Stamina
- Charm
- Restoration Magic Power
- Offensive Magic Power
- Max HP
- Max MP
- Attack Power
- Defense Power
- Style
Skills
Dragon Quest IX will also have a skill system. When you gain levels, you will receive Skill Points, which you can deposit in certain Skills. Each class has five skills: 4 weapon/equipment related and 1 unique to the class. By putting Skill Points into your various Skills, you can learn special Techniques to use in battle. Here’s the rundown of the skill information released so far:
Soldier
Skills:
- Sword
- Spear
- Dagger
- Shield
- Courage
Techniques:
- Dragon Cut (learned by raising Sword Skill)
- Charge - Charge straight at an enemy and do lots of damage. (learned by raising Courage Skill)
- Miracle Sword
Mage
Skills:
- ??
- ??
- ??
- ??
- Magic
Techniques:
- Magic Barrier - reduce damage done to you by surrounding yourself with this barrier. (learned by putting points in the Magic skill)
Priest
Skills:
- Spear
- Staff
- Cane?? (not sure how this is different from Staff. Maybe wands? Or mace-like weapons?)
- Shield
- Piety
Techniques:
- Goddess’s Protection - commune with the Goddess and wipe out the fear of death with this technique. Gained by putting points into the Piety skill.
Fighter
Skills:
- ??
- ??
- ??
- ??
- Fighting Spirit
Techniques:
- Build Strength - Save your strength and increase your Tension, then unleash your tension in a devastating attack. If you save Tension long enough, you will enter Super High Tension mode, and God only knows what you can happen then!
- Ripping Steel Fist
Thief
Skills:
- ??
- ??
- ??
- ??
- ??
Techniques:
- Steal - steal from enemies in combat.

The screenshots and you description make this look like it will be a fun RPG for the DS!
Are the question marks where you had difficulty translating?

@Peter: The question marks mean that it wasn’t revealed in the article. We know that each class has five skills, so I made a list of five for each class. But in the cases were only one of the skills was revealed, I filled in the remaining skills with question marks.
There’s one exception. Under the priest skills, there was one that I translated as “Cane??”. This was one where I wasn’t sure about the translation.
